Emergency Lighting Testing

Have you got emergency lighting installed? It is critical that emergency lighting is installed if in the case of a power failure as it enables all people in the premises to find their way out of a building through clearly lit emergency exits and escape routes.

Servicing and testing emergency lighting

A mains power failure on the normal lighting circuit must be simulated. This then makes the emergency lighting system operate from the battery. This test can be carried out manually or automatically.

Types of Emergency Lighting

Emergency escape lighting – As part of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, this lighting appears in the event of a power failure or fire to direct escapees safely outside.

Standby lighting– If in the event of power failure, standby lighting is provided as part of an emergency lighting system to enable normal activities to continue.

• Emergency Lights need an annual test which takes no longer than 3 hours
• Every six months a 1-hour test should be carried out
• A flick test is required on a monthly basis to ensure batteries and light fittings are in working order
